Gerrard Devestated With League Campaign
Former England international Alan Shearer says that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has the ability to withstand the pressure on him right now after missing out on the league title once more. Liverpool lost the ability to win the first Premier league title in the history after drawing 3-3 against Crystal Palace on Monday. The result proved costly as Manchester city won the title by winning their matches in hand against Aston Villa and West Ham. This meant that the final day win over Newcastle was meaningless for Liverpool.
Gerrard said that he is absolutely devastated with the outcome of the league campaign this season. However, he is trying to look at the positives, which primarily includes a return to Champions League for the club. Gerrard has been in imperious form for Liverpool this campaign despite playing in a unique position. He has been largely utilised as one of the central defenders over the course of the match. Despite this, he has come in with more than 15 goals this campaign. He has also contributed numerous assists as well.
Shearer, who had the experience of winning the league title with Blackburn, says that Gerrard will certainly recover from this loss and will come back much stronger next season.
“The last couple of weeks won’t affect him in the slightest. Whoever is in the 23 will – and should – be good enough to handle whatever is thrown at them. With Steven, you can throw whatever you like at him and he would be able to handle it and still be one of the very top players. There’s been so much talk – and there always is – that you just can’t wait to get there and get it all going,” said Shearer about the prospects of Gerrard doing well for the England team at the World Cup.
